Wide Angle Tasmania is a unique screen activator, incubator and filmmaking-hub. In 2021, Wide Angle Tasmania, with the generous support of the Tasmanian Community Fund, built the GRIT initiative. GRIT, initiated by Wide Angle’s Executive Director at the time, Abi Binning, uses story to connect with community and improve community resilience. GRIT’s purpose is to generate conversations that lead to audiences to having greater awareness, closer connections and taking action to create social change.
Wide Angle Tasmania invited some of Tasmania’s most outstanding filmmakers to bring their distinctive voices to film to address urgent social issues that have relevance to all Tasmanians.
The filmmakers were invited to make films that challenge, inspire and emotionally connect with audiences. The power of films is that they can offer surprising perspectives that invite audiences to consider issues with fresh eyes. They are uniquely positioned to communicate difficult ideas, be emotionally compelling, and be a vehicle for building social cohesion within the community.
The GRIT films aim to inspire and provide a model for how we can take responsibility for creating a better world for ourselves, our families, other Tasmanians, and beyond. Through sharing stories of Tasmanians who have demonstrated strength in adversity, GRIT aims to increase social connection and community resilience.
